Powerball Game Rules
A player must select five numbers between 1 and 69 and then select one number (the Powerball) between 1 and 26. The cost for one play is $2. A player may select each set in one of three ways: by verbally communicating the numbers to the retailer, by completing a playslip or by requesting a "Quick Pick." A Quick Pick is a computerized randomly-selected set of numbers available through the Draw Games terminal. Powerball is drawn three times a week – Monday, Wednesday and Saturday – at approximately 9:59 p.m. The more numbers the player matches to those drawn, the more he or she wins.
How to play Powerball using a playslip
- The playslip has five play boards (“PLAY 1” through “PLAY 5”) with two sections on each board. Numbers 1 to 69 are in the top section and numbers 1 through 26 are in the bottom section. You may play just 1 board, or play up to all 5 boards. Cost per board is $2. Double Play and Power Play are available to select as optional add-ons for an additional $1 each, per Powerball play. See below for Double Play and Power Play details.
- Select five numbers in the top portion and one number (the Powerball) in the bottom portion by placing a heavy mark in each circle, beginning in board “PLAY 1”. To have the terminal to select the numbers randomly, mark the circle next to “QP” for “Quick Pick”. If you make a mistake, mark the “VOID” circle on that board and select your numbers on the next board.
- To play your numbers for more than one drawing at a time, mark the appropriate circle on the playslip next to “MULTI-DRAW”. You can play Powerball for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9, 12 or 15 drawings.
- Use only a blue or black pen or use a pencil for marking selections. The terminal will not accept red ink.
How to play Powerball using a digital playslip with the mobile app
- Select how many drawings you'd like to play. You can play Powerball for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 12 or 15 drawings.
- Choose whether to add Power Play by selecting "Yes" or "No." Power Play is a multiplier feature that allows players to increase their non-jackpot prize amount by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10* times. Adding Power Play costs an additional $1 per Powerball play.
*The 10X multiplier is available only on jackpots of $150 million or less. - Choose whether to add Double Play by selecting "Yes" or "No." Double Play is a feature that allows Powerball players to play their numbers in a second drawing for an additional $1 per play. Double Play drawings are held following the main Powerball drawing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.
- Select the numbers you want to play. First select five white-ball numbers from 1 to 69; shake your phone or tap the Quick Pick button to have the app select your numbers for you. Next, select a Powerball number from 1 to 26; shake your phone or tap the Quick Pick button to have the app select your number for you.
- Review your digital playslip, then tap "Save Digital Playslip." Present the QR code at retail to use your digital playslip.
How to play Powerball verbally
At the discretion of the retailer, Powerball may be played by making a verbal request for a ticket. The player must provide the clerk with all of the following information:
- The dollar amount to be played
- The numbers to be played - either player-selected or "Quick Pick"
- The number of draws to be played.
- The addition of Power Play and/or Double Play, if desired.
Powerball tickets CANNOT be canceled.
Jackpot winners have 60 days from the claiming date to declare whether they would like their payments in CASH (equal to approximately 50 percent of the estimated, advertised jackpot) or ANNUITY (the advertised jackpot amount paid in 30 graduated annual payments). The set prize amounts are based on an expected number of winners. In some cases, these prizes may be paid on a pari-mutuel basis, which will be lower than the published prize levels.
Prizes are approximately 50 percent of sales. Overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.87 for each $2 ticket played.
Power Play® - General Rules
Power Play is a multiplier feature that allows a winner to increase their original prize amount by 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 TIMES! If you choose the Power Play option and win anywhere from $4 to $50,000, your winnings will be multiplied by 2 to 10 times, depending on the multiplier number drawn at the beginning of each Powerball drawing! Power Play does not apply to jackpot prize winnings. Matching five of five white-ball numbers and not the Powerball will automatically award a $2 million prize when Power Play is chosen! Power Play costs an additional $1 per play and can be chosen by marking "POWER PLAY - YES" on the Powerball playslip or asking the retailer to enter it through the terminal.
Double Play® - General Rules
The Double Play feature allows Powerball players to play their same numbers in a second drawing with a chance to win up to $10 million! Double Play drawings are held immediately following the main Powerball drawing on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Powerball tickets with Double Play are eligible to win any prize in the main Powerball drawing as well as the Double Play drawing, or both. See the prize structure table for Double Play on the main Powerball Game Details page. Double Play costs an additional $1 per play and can be chosen by marking “DOUBLE PLAY –YES” on the Powerball playslip or asking the retailer to enter it through the terminal.
