It took a Missouri Lottery player nearly two months to realize he was the winner of a $50,000 Powerball prize from the April 19 drawing. The player purchased the ticket at Mike's Cut Rate Liquors, 8447 Wornall Road in Kansas City, and then forgot about it in his bag.
“I only play a couple times a year, and I actually didn’t check the ticket for like two months,” the winner explained.
When he finally did get around to checking it at a Missouri Lottery retailer, he saw an unexpected message on the screen.
“It said something that I’d never seen before, so I took it up to the counter and had them check it,” he said.
The clerk scanned it and saw the $50,000 prize on the screen.
“He just handed it to me and said, ‘Congratulations,’ and I left so quickly,” the player recalled.
Coincidently, he already had a family vacation planned, which ended up being the day after he learned of his win.
“I won and then the day after that went on vacation, so it was really nice!” he said.
The winning numbers on April 19 were 7, 25, 37, 39 and 63 with a Powerball number of 1. The player, who matched four of the white-ball numbers, as well as the Powerball number drawn, claimed the prize on June 5 at the Missouri Lottery’s regional office in Kansas City.
Powerball is a multi-state Draw Game with drawings held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. This Wednesdays jackpot is estimated at $101 million.
In FY24, players in Jackson County won more than $109.8 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, retailers received more than $9.8 million in commissions and bonuses, and more than $22 million in Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county.
