A quick trip to the grocery store turned into a big win for a Missouri Lottery player when he added the Power Play option to his Powerball ticket for the Sept. 6 drawing.

When the winner returned to Hy-Vee, 625 S.W. Highway 40 in Blue Springs, to check his ticket, he was surprised to find the cashier on duty was already expecting him.

“When I got there, and the lady looked at me, she turned around and said, ‘Oh my God, you’re the one!’” he shared.

“I said, ‘Is that what I think it is?’ and she said ‘Yes, you won that $150,000!’”

The ticket matched four of the five white-ball numbers drawn, plus the Powerball, to win a base prize of $50,000. The prize amount instantly tripled to $150,000 when the Power Play number drawn was 3. The winning numbers were 9, 14, 20, 23 and 63, with a Powerball of 1.

“It was a Quick Pick,” the winner shared. “I just let the machine pick it, and there it was.”

Monday’s Powerball jackpot is estimated at $638 million. If the Powerball jackpot is hit, the “Jackpot Reset” promotion will be activated – giving players who buy three Powerball plays on a single ticket a free $2 Powerball ticket.

In FY23, players in Jackson County won more than $108.7 million in Missouri Lottery prizes, retailers received more than $9.9 million in commissions and bonuses, and more than $15.5 million in Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county.
