Powerball Winner 'One Number Away From Being a Billion'

Jul 28, 2023

A Missouri Lottery player in Monett said his prize was “one number away from being a billion,” but he was more than happy to collect a $50,000 when his ticket matched four of the five white-ball numbers drawn, plus the Powerball, in the July 17 drawing.

The winning numbers were 5, 8, 9, 17 and 41, with a Powerball number of 21.

The winner purchased the ticket at Monett Truck Stop, 1100 S. Lincoln in Monett, and claimed his prize July 20 in the Missouri Lottery’s regional office in Springfield.

The winner shared plans to invest his winnings.

Saturday’s Powerball jackpot is estimated at $60 million. If the Powerball jackpot is hit, the “Jackpot Reset” promotion will be activated – giving players who buy three Powerball plays on a single ticket a free $2 Powerball ticket.

Players who purchased tickets in Barry County in FY22 won more than $6.5 million in total Missouri Lottery prizes. Retailers in the county received more than $631,000 in commissions and bonuses, and education programs received more than $631,000 in appropriated Lottery proceeds.
