'You're Yanking My Chain' Says Spouse of Powerball Winner

Jul 20, 2023

A Powerball winner in Kansas City had to convince their spouse they won a $50,000 prize in the July 5 drawing.

After checking winning numbers the next morning, the winner realized their ticket matched four of the five white-ball numbers, plus the Powerball. The news was hard to take in.

“I texted my spouse and said, ‘Hey, we just won $50,000!” they recalled. “They thought I was joking!”

Once home and able to check the physical ticket, they realized it was indeed, a winner.

“They said, ‘I thought you were yanking my chain!’” the winner laughed.

“I couldn’t believe it myself!” they added. “I said, “Am I seeing this right?’”

Plans for some of the winnings include early retirement and continued Lottery play.

“You can’t win if you don’t play!”

The ticket was purchased at Quik Trip, 13100 Holmes Road, in Kansas City.

The winning numbers from July 5 are 17, 24, 48, 62 and 68, with a Powerball of 23.

Saturday’s Powerball jackpot is estimated at $20 million. Because the jackpot was hit Wednesday night, the “Jackpot Reset” promotion is currently activated – giving players who buy three Powerball plays on a single ticket a free $2 Powerball ticket.

Players who purchased tickets in Jackson County in FY22 won more than $103.1 million in total Missouri Lottery prizes. Retailers in the county received more than $9.3 million in commissions and bonuses in FY22, and education programs received more than $50.2 million in appropriated Lottery proceeds.
