Arnold Man Vies For 'Husband of the Year' With $50,000 Surprise

Dec. 13 was just like many other days for Arnold resident Michael Hatch, complete with a Missouri Lottery Powerball purchase. The rest of the week, however, proved to be unlike any other Hatch has experienced yet.

After purchasing a Quick Pick Powerball ticket for the Dec. 14 drawing, Hatch, 49, would later learn that his ticket matched four white-ball numbers and the Powerball drawn, resulting in a $50,000 prize in the game.

“I must have read the ticket 10 times and read all the possible verbiage and dates on the (Lottery) website,” said Hatch. “I was the only one home at the time, which made it even more difficult.”

Realizing the uniqueness of his situation, Hatch decided to take advantage of the win and an upcoming celebration.

“My wife’s birthday was the next day. I decided to wait and tell her about it until that night,” said Hatch, adding that he kept the $50,000 prize a secret from all loved ones until after he surprised his wife, Margaret, on her birthday.

“She was somewhere between shocked and excited. She wanted to see the ticket right away to make sure we were seeing the same thing.”

The Hatch couple plan to use the $50,000 prize to “stabilize” their finances by paying off bills.

“I’ll definitely play more,” continued Hatch. “This is a great prize, but one more number would have changed our entire lives.”

Hatch purchased his winning ticket from Wallis Petroleum, 3611 W. Outer Road, in Arnold. The numbers drawn in the Dec. 14 drawing were 18, 26, 37, 39 and 66 with a Powerball of 15.

Powerball is a multi-state Draw Game with jackpots that start at $40 million which have grown to more than $1.5 billion. A game change in October 2015 increased the third-tier prize for matching four white-ball numbers and the Powerball from $10,000 to $50,000. Since that game change, 80 Missouri Lottery players have won a $50,000 prize.
