Kansas City resident Bradford Young buys a couple of Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets each week, and he has some favorites he likes to play, including newly released games. While trying to decide which ticket to play at a local QuikTrip on Dec. 31, he made a lucky decision to go with a new game and ultimately uncovered its first top prize of $100,000.
“I knew that ‘20X The Cash’ just came out on Monday, because they come out the last Monday of every month,” Young said, while claiming his prize at a Lottery office the following week. “I bought one on Monday, but I didn’t do anything on it, so when I went back on Saturday, I was staring between the ‘Gold Rush’ and the ‘20X The Cash.’ And I just happened to say, ‘Let me get that 20X ticket.’”
Several hours later, Young discovered he was a winner.
“I scratched the numbers off first,” he said. “This time I went from right to left, and the second number was a 20X.”
Upon seeing the symbol, Young thought he’d probably won $100. After scratching the remaining numbers, he then went back to the 20X symbol to scratch the prize associated with it, assuming he’d see a $5 prize to be multiplied by 20. What he saw in its place surprised the 54-year-old.
“It was a five,” he said. “But the zeroes just never quit.”
So instead, Young got to multiply a $5,000 prize by 20 to land a $100,000 top prize.
“I didn’t believe it,” he added. “I must have looked at that ticket off and on all night long.”
Young is looking forward to putting the bulk of the prize money toward his retirement and plans to continue playing Scratchers games.
“No sense stopping now,” he said.
Young purchased his winning “20X The Cash” ticket at QuikTrip, 10601 State Line Road, in Kansas City. The $5 game – which first went on sale Dec. 27, 2016 – currently offers more than $16.9 million in available prizes, including six more top prizes of $100,000.
