California Man Finds One of First $10,000 Prizes in New Game

It only took one day for a California resident to find a $10,000 prize on one of the newest Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets.

“I work nights. So after I got off work, I picked up my son from a sleepover and went to Mr. G’s,” said Kyle Sweeney, 33, while claiming his $10,000 prize a mere two hours after purchasing his winning “50X The Cash” Scratchers ticket.

“I’ll buy a couple $5 or $10 tickets every once in a while. I saw that this ticket was new and thought I would get two of them,” said Sweeney. “They were ticket numbers seven and eight, and I even thought about that ticket being ‘Lucky number 7.’”

After returning home and locating a lucky quarter, Sweeney began playing his two tickets. The first number he uncovered matched one of the ticket’s winning numbers.

“That one had a $500 prize. Then I matched the next number, and that one had a $500 prize. Once I got to the fourth or fifth number, I started realizing that that every number would probably match with $500. My heart started beating real fast,” said Sweeney. “There were a lot of zeros.”

After adding up all $500 prizes and realizing his ticket was worth $10,000, the California resident called his wife and departed to Lottery Headquarters in Jefferson City to claim the prize.

Sweeney and his family are in the midst of a home remodeling project, with Sweeney taking on a majority of the work himself.

“I’m putting hardwood floors in the dining room and in the hallways. Now that I have this, I might hire someone to install that for me,” said Sweeney, adding that the prize will come in handy with other remodeling expenditures.
Sweeney purchased his winning “50X The Cash” ticket from Mr. G’s Liquor store, 306 W. Buchanan Street in California, on Dec. 28, just one day after the ticket was officially introduced. Sweeney is one of the first Missouri Lottery players to claim a top-tier prize in the game, which has more than 100 prizes from $10,000 to $1 million available.
