As an employee at Wharf Pharmacy, W. 2175 Terra Lane in O’Fallon, it’s not uncommon for Katelyn Moore to grab a couple necessities when her shift nears an end. From time to time, it’s also not unlikely for Moore’s family members to request that she purchase a few things for them. Such was the case on Nov. 29, when the O’Fallon resident happened to purchase a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket containing a $27,777 top prize.

“My grandma wanted me to buy her a picture frame from our store,” said Moore, adding that she seldom plays the Missouri Lottery. “When I was checking out, I just felt like buying a Scratchers ticket. I don’t know why, I never go anywhere to specifically buy a ticket.”

Moore continued, saying that she selected a “Silver 7s” ticket only after learning the “Jumbo Bucks” ticket she initially wanted was sold out.

While ending her shift, Moore played her “Silver 7s” ticket to reveal a “Black 7” symbol, which automatically wins the prize shown for the symbol. Moore admits, however, to having low expectations for the outcome.

“I scratched the ‘7’ first, and I told my co-worker that I won $10 or something,” said Moore. “I scratched off the ($27,777) prize and started sweating a lot, freaked out and started crying.”

Moore’s $27,777 win comes as a welcomed financial relief after a stint of bad luck with her previous car and various car repairs. After claiming the prize at the Lottery’s St. Louis office on Dec. 1, Moore used the prize to purchase a new Chevy Cruze and pay off her student loans.

A $2 Scratchers game first introduced on Sept. 26, “Silver 7s” offers prizes ranging from $2 to $27,777. The game currently has more than $3.9 million in remaining prizes, including multiple $27,777 top prizes.
