Routine Day Gets $50,000 Jolt in Dunklin County

December 3 was a routine day for Michael Harper of Campbell, until he played a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket. Harper, 61, was planning on running some errands with his grandson when his wife, Mary, asked him to turn in her winning crossword-themed Scratchers tickets for additional tickets.

“They were in the visor of my car. I grabbed them and went to the Junction to get a soda with my grandson,” said Harper, who purchased five tickets, including a winning “10X Crossword” Scratchers ticket, from Junction, 419 Church St. Highway 25 and B, in Holcomb.

“I put them in my back pocket, went to Wal-Mart and back home to put up Christmas lights with a $50,000 ticket and didn’t even know it,” he said.

Soon after returning home, Harper gave a few of the tickets to his wife and played one of the tickets himself.

“She’s the crossword ticket aficionado. I saw that I had a few words on my ticket, so I gave it to her to play the rest and went into the kitchen,” said Harper, thinking they had won a few bucks. “I came back in, and she just had this look on her face. I took a look at the ticket, and I was speechless, which never happens.”

On one of the tickets, Harper matched his letters with 11 words in the puzzle, bringing him a $50,000 top prize.

The owner of a Chevrolet Corvette in his early 20s, Harper said that he’s always wanted to purchase another, newer version, of the hot rod.

“I don’t know if I’ll actually purchase one, but this might get me in one to test drive,” laughed Harper.

The winner might be on the fence about a new vehicle purchase, but Harper and his wife did decide to take their first-ever Amtrak trip with a portion of their prize.

“We’ve never taken a trip by train. We would like to go up to Kansas City to visit our daughter, and then take it out to Colorado sometime in the spring,” concluded Harper.

Introduced on May 25, “10X Crossword” is a $3 crossword-inspired ticket with prizes ranging from $3 to $50,000. More information about all Missouri Lottery games can be found at MOLottery.com.
