Liberty Business Owner Gets $5 Million Birthday Gift

At 57 years old, Gary Jones Sr. of Liberty isn’t a big Missouri Lottery player himself. He would rather buy Scratchers tickets to give to loved ones on special occasions like anniversaries and birthdays. Jones happened to be the recipient of one such Scratchers gift on his own birthday. The gift ended up changing his life.

“We were at a birthday gathering for me, and someone dropped this ticket on the table in front of me and said, ‘Happy Birthday,’” recalled Jones, admitting that he wasn’t positive which friend gifted him a “$5,000,000 Big Money” Scratchers ticket.

“We got home later that night when my wife reminded me that I had the ticket,” said Jones.

“He gave it to me to scratch, while he went to the other room,” said Jones’s wife, Kaylen. “I played it and had to yell at him to come take a look.”

“We’re both still shocked,” said Jones, while claiming the $5 million prize at the Lottery’s Kansas City regional office on Oct. 27. “I’m a business owner, and just yesterday we were talking about our debt and wondering how we could possibly pay it off. Then this happened.”

Jones decided to take the lump-sum cash amount worth approximately $3.1 million. With that prize, the new millionaire plans to pay off all financial debts, both personal and business related. Then, the couple plan to build their dream home.
Jones is the first Lottery player to uncover a $5 million top prize in the $20 “$5,000,000 Big Money” Scratchers game, which officially started on May 31. Jones is also the 459th Missouri Lottery-made millionaire in the Lottery’s 30-year history. Additional winner stories can be found here at MOLottery.com.
