With today’s monthly transfer, the total proceeds generated by the Missouri Lottery since sales began in 1986 surpassed $1.9 billion.  Today’s transfer of $13.7 million is based on lottery sales in November, and brings the total amount of proceeds in fiscal year 2003 to more than $88.6 million.

From start-up through June 1993, all Missouri Lottery proceeds were sent to the state’s General Revenue Fund for a total of more than $542 million.  In August 1992, voters approved an amendment to send all proceeds to benefit public education.  Since that change took effect in July 1993, all proceeds have been directed to the Lottery Proceeds Fund to benefit both Elementary and Secondary programs and Higher Education programs in Missouri for a total of more than $1.3 billion.  In all, more than $1.9 billion in proceeds have been raised for the state, including education, through Lottery ticket sales.

Approximately 27.5 cents of every dollar spent playing the Lottery goes to education.  The Missouri Lottery’s contribution to public education is about 3 percent of education’s total annual funding.

Each year, the Legislature appropriates Lottery proceeds to various education programs.  For a complete list of education programs funded, visit the Lottery’s Web site at www.molottery.com.
