Mother, Daughter Win $50,000 in Union

There they sat, mother and daughter, in the parking lot of a convenience store, both speechless about how their coffee run turned into a $50,000 win.

Kelly Jones and her mother, Venita Jones of Union, went to their local gas station to grab a cup of coffee on Oct. 27 like they have done many times before. While checking out, Jones decided to buy a $2 Missouri Lottery Scratcher ticket with her coffee.

“I won $40 on the $2 ticket and thought, ‘Heck, I’ll get one of the $3 (holiday) ones,’” said Jones, talking about the “Triple Peppermint 7s” Scratchers ticket. “Then I won $50 on that one and heard a voice that told me to buy the next one.”

It was the final ticket she bought that morning and the very last scratch that revealed the $50,000 win.
“I double-checked with the cashier. ‘Am I seeing this right?’” said Jones. “Then we hugged, and she told me how happy she was for me!”

Jones bought the “$300,000,000 Golden Ticket” at Wallis Petroleum, 15221 Manchester Road, in Ballwin where she said they are regulars. She and her mother immediately signed the back of the ticket and claimed their winnings at the St. Louis regional office the very next day. In that short amount of time, they already have plans for their winnings.

“My mom will put some into savings and some towards her retirement fund,” said Jones. “I am going to pay off hospital bills from this summer and give some to go towards my brother’s hunting cabin he is building.”

The $30 “$300,000,000 Golden Ticket” Scratchers game officially went on sale Jan. 25, five days after the Lottery’s 30th anniversary on Jan. 20. The new game offers players 30 chances to win up to $10 million on each ticket and more than $300 million in cash prizes.
