'Wrong' Ticket Proves to be Right Choice; Yields $50,000 Prize

Neelyville resident George Hall was basking in a $50,000 win as he walked into the St. Louis office of the Missouri Lottery, all thanks to a “mistake” made while purchasing a Scratchers ticket. The 45-year-old had intended to buy a different game, but the outcome was all smiles when the error worked out in his favor.

“I got the wrong ticket,” Hall explained. “She (the clerk) just grabbed the wrong one, and I said, ‘That’s OK. I’ll take it.’”

He soon decided it was more than OK. After scratching off one of the $50,000 top prizes on the “10X Crossword” ticket he’d been handed, Hall headed back into The Junction, located at 17263 Highway 67 South in Neelyville, to verify he had a winning ticket.

“I scanned the ticket myself, and it said, ‘Congrats. You won $50,000.’”

He then asked the clerk to scan it, and she, too, confirmed the win.

“I told her I wanted it all in ones,” he teased of his initial reaction.

Because the win happened on a Saturday, Hall and his wife, Mary, had to wait until the following Monday to claim their prize at a Lottery office. The pair was so excited they drove to St. Louis on Sunday and stayed in a hotel overnight, ready to present their winning ticket first thing the next morning.

“We have a few bills to pay. I’ve been working 60 hours a week trying to stay on top of things,” Hall shared. “So this came at a real good time.”

10X Crossword” is a $3 game that started May 25. More than $3.4 million in prizes are still available in the game. Remaining prizes for all Missouri Lottery Scratchers games can be tracked at MOLottery.com.
