Eight-Year Powerball Tradition Finally Pays Off for Group of 19

A group of 18 women and one man have collectively purchased a Powerball ticket twice a week for the last eight years and never won. On Oct. 5, their losing streak ended when Megan Fahy purchased the $50,000 winning ticket at Dan’s Liquor, 98 Legend Parkway 102, in Eureka.

“On Wednesday night, I wrote down the winning numbers and brought them to work,” said Fahy, explaining how she didn’t look at the ticket until the next day at work. “We all discovered we won at the same time, and we were so excited! Needless to say, not a lot of work got done the rest of the day.”

The group of 19 works at Rockwood High School in child nutrition services. They have had some girls leave the group and new ones join in the last eight years. Fahy says they now call the new girls their “lucky charms”.

Fahy says she has no idea what she will do with her winnings, but she said most of the group is planning something special for their families.

“One girl said she was going to buy singing lessons, and I told her we didn’t win enough for that,” laughed Fahy.

The group of 19 winners, each receiving $2,631, consists of: Bonnie Schleter, Arnold; Stephen Wilson, Ballwin; Roberta Zande, Byrnes Mill; Brenda Peterson, Catawissa; Kristin Calcaterra, Cheryl Curran, Megan Fahy, Gretchen Field, Barbara Maricic, Beverly Riley, and Tamara Starkey, all of Eureka; Diane Anderer, Kristi Gordon, Sheila Jaycox and Susan Williams, all of Fenton; Natasha McKay, Robertsville; Lynsey Martin, St. Louis; Ronda Emmons, Union; and Wanda Adams, Villa Ridge.

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $40 million. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. Research all current and past winning numbers at MOLottery.com.
