Mexico Man Aspires To Retire With $100,000 Win

A Mexico resident with an affinity for Missouri Lottery crossword-inspired Scratchers tickets recently won a $100,000 top prize. Erron Schick was leaving work on the morning of Sept. 28 when he remembered he had a winning Scratchers ticket in his truck.

“I had a $5 winner and wanted to trade it in for another $5 ticket,” recalled Schick, 66. “I went to one of the stores I like to buy tickets from, but they didn’t have the ‘Triple Cherry Crossword.’ So I went down the road to Xpress Mart and got this ticket there.”

Schick, who purchased his ticket from Xpress Mart, 1411 W. Monroe St. in Mexico, drove home before he played his ticket.

“I was sitting there scratching and kept uncovering full words. By the time I was done, I thought I had won $600 and was worried that I would have to drive all the way to Jeff City to claim it,” continued Schick.

After counting 10 words and double-checking his ticket, Schick was surprised to see that he had in fact won a $100,000 top prize. At that point, Schick gladly departed for Lottery Headquarters in Jefferson City, but not before returning to Xpress Mart to share the good news with the clerk who sold him the winning ticket.

“I’m sure glad I remembered about that $5 winner,” exclaimed Schick, while claiming his prize.

Once he turned his ticket in at Lottery Headquarters, Schick called his wife, Debbie, who was at work, to share the good news.

“I work nights and she works days, so I usually call her in the morning to tell her I love her and wish her a good day. Today’s call had a little extra good news,” said Schick. “She kept saying, ‘How much – How much money?’”

Schick is hoping that his $100,000 haul will be enough to accomplish two financial dreams: pay off the couple’s home and retire from the same steel manufacturer he has worked at for more than 20 years.

“Last year, we thought that I might be able to retire, but it didn’t end up working out. This should hopefully get us there,” said Schick.

A $5 crossword Scratchers game, “Triple Cherry Crossword” was introduced on March 7, and offers players prizes for uncovering words on two play areas. A list of remaining prizes for all Missouri Lottery Scratchers games can be found here at MOLottery.com.
