A Poplar Bluff optometrist saw $18,250 added to his bank account after he won four prizes in the Oct. 14 Pick 4 drawing. Jerry Long, 53, said he plans to use some of the money to take his wife on a trip for her upcoming 50th birthday.

"I’ve always said, ’I’d rather be lucky than tall,’" mused Long, when he claimed his prizes on Oct. 16.

Long won two $6,000 prizes for matching all four numbers - 4, 9, 5 and 3 - in a straight order. He won two $3,125 prizes for matching those same numbers on two straight/box plays for a total winnings of $18,250. He picked the numbers using the last two digits of his wife’s birth year, 53, and the last two digits of his birth year, 49.

Long purchased his winning ticket at Cottage Inn, 2926 N. Westwood Blvd. in Poplar Bluff.
