Warsaw Veteran Wins Largest Club Keno Prize Ever

“What goes around comes around” is a motto that Royce Kelb of Warsaw lives his life by, and luck came around on Aug. 2 when Kelb won a $300,035 Missouri Lottery Club Keno prize – the largest Club Keno prize ever won in Missouri. Kelb purchased his historic Club Keno ticket at Corner Garden Bar and Grill, 317 E. Main Street, in Warsaw.

Kelb, 65, and his wife, Susan, enjoy playing Club Keno and Scratchers tickets regularly.

“I usually play a 10-Spot ticket,” said Kelb. “We always play at Corner Garden. We were sitting there, and I was watching the numbers come up on the screen. I turned to (Susan) and said, ‘We’re in trouble.’”

Kelb used Quick Pick to select all 10 numbers on his 10-spot ticket, and won his $300,035 prize by matching all of his numbers and the Bulls-Eye add on feature.

“Had I gotten the Double Bulls-Eye, the prize would have been $1 million, but you’re never going to hear me complain about that. I’ll gladly take what I got,” said Kelb, while claiming his prize at Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City on Aug. 4 with his wife.

By the time the couple returned to the location the next day, everyone in town had heard the news, including the regular customers at Corner Garden who cheered when they walked in.

Not even a day after winning his record-breaking Keno prize, Kelb had already purchased his first splurge with the prize.

“We ordered new barstools for the entire bar,” said Kelb. “We are both retired veterans, and Shirley (owner of Corner Garden) is so good to us and does a lot for local veterans. I work with our local VFW, and, any time I’m doing a fundraiser, she’s the first to volunteer to help. These barstools are the least we could do.”

Before making any other purchasing decisions, the couple would like to consult a financial advisor, but they are hoping to plan a trip to Italy and Ireland in the near future with their historic haul.

To play Club Keno, players can choose how many different numbers (also called “spots”) they want to play from 1 to 10. Twenty numbers from a field of one to 80 are chosen in a computerized random Club Keno drawing held every four minutes.  To learn more about Club Keno or any of the Missouri Lottery games, visit MOLottery.com.
