A St. Joseph woman said she ended up with a $77,777 Missouri Lottery prize because she likes to play the sevens. Elizabeth Kaahea said she stops at City Star, 320 Edmond St. in St Joseph, on her way to work at Ventura Foods.

“It’s a very regular stop,” said Kaahea, adding that it often includes a Scratchers buy. “Probably 50/50; some mornings I do, some mornings I don’t.”

She was thrilled with her purchase on July 29. She scratched the “Ruby Red 7s” ticket she bought that morning after she arrived at work.

“The first one I scratched was $777,” recalled Kaahea. “I kept scratching, saying, ‘No way. Someone gave me a fake ticket.’”

She ended up with the second top prize in the game of $77,777.

“I always play it when you guys bring that back. It is one of my favorites,” she said.

At first, Kaahea thought she would sit on the ticket for a while, but then she got nervous and rounded up her Hawaiian-born husband, Keoki, and two children to head to the Kansas City Lottery office. She said she planned to pay off her school loans from Missouri S&T and head back to school to finish her degree.

“I have an opportunity to go back now,” she declared.

Though she was still “in shock that it’s real,” Kaahea said to, “keep scratching.”
“I’ve been playing Scratchers as long as they’ve had Scratchers,” she said, which might be stretch for the 36-year-old. The Missouri Lottery is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Ruby Red 7s” is a $5 game that officially began April 25. More than $10 million in prizes, including five top prizes, remain in the game. Track prizes remaining for any Missouri Lottery Scratchers game here at MOLottery.com.
