Missouri Lottery Millionaires Spruce Up Springfield Zoo

A group of 63 Missouri Lottery winners – millionaires and their families – with combined winnings totaling more than $342 million, spent a few hours of their time on June 28 sprucing up the Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield. The event was part of the 28th Millionaires Reunion, held June 27-29 in Springfield and Branson.

“Part of our reunion involves giving back to the community,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director for the Missouri Lottery. “The Dickerson Park Zoo is one of Springfield’s great learning attractions, where people can see and learn about hundreds of animals from all around the world. So we are excited to be able to help them and get a chance to see the animals, too.”

The millionaires helped with several updates including cleaning windows, weeding and rock removal to help with the aesthetics of the zoo environment.

The charitable event is just one of the activities during this year’s reunion, which is also a celebration of the Lottery’s 30th anniversary. They enjoyed dinner on the Branson Landing, saw the “Acrobats of China Show,” and they plan to watch the 2016 MLB Double-A Texas League All-Star Game tonight at Hammons Field, home of the Springfield Cardinals.

The millionaires will also hear a presentation on “Consumer Protection” by Tom Durkin, public education director for the Missouri Attorney General’s office.

Reardon said one benefit of holding the reunions is to give the winners a chance to talk with each other and share their experiences.

“The millionaires enjoy meeting other people who have won a life-changing prize,” said Reardon. “Several of our millionaires have developed close friendships over the years.”

Reardon said the Missouri Lottery organizes the reunions, and the millionaires pay their own way at the events.

Since it began in 1986, the Lottery has created more than 450 millionaires, with prizes ranging from $1 million to $293.7 million.
