St. Joseph Nurse Shares $1 Million Prize with Three Sisters

A St. Joseph woman uncovered the first $1 million prize on the Missouri Lottery’s new “$300,000,000 Golden Ticket” Scratchers game – and she is sharing it with her sisters. Beatrice “Bea” Stuck, 65, said she bought the ticket at Trex Mart, 614 N. Walnut St. in Cameron, during the first week of March. She decided she wanted to share the prize with her three sisters, and it took a while to get them all together.

“We all grew up without having a whole lot,” Stuck explained as to why she was sharing. “My dad’s a disabled vet, so we didn’t have very much.”

Stuck is sharing her good fortune with: Cecil Hawkins, 59, of Topeka, Kan.; Joyce Chance, 64, of St. Joseph; and Elizabeth Ruth, 70, of St. Joseph.

Stuck said this windfall will help her “breathe a little easier in retirement.” She said a couple of them plan to give a little money to their kids, and some sisters have mentioned that they plan to save some money and pay some bills with it. Stuck and her husband, Steven, also plan to travel.

“The one thing we said was that we were going to Charleston, S.C., after I retire in July,” Stuck said. “Now I am more at ease about going.”

Stuck said she won $100 a couple times in December of 2014 playing Missouri Lottery “crossword-themed” Scratchers tickets. Though she had never purchased one of the new $30 Scratchers, Stuck said her father had won a couple prizes, $100 and $150, on them, which made her decide to try one.

“I thought, ‘What the heck?’” she said.

Lucky for her, the only $30 ticket she purchased turned out to be worth $1 million.

Another big prize winner, who only bought one Powerball ticket at this same location when it was under a different name and ownership, was Millie Bond of Cameron. She bought one Powerball ticket in March 1993, when the location was known as My Store, and she ended up winning $29.5 million.

$300,000,000 Golden Ticket” is the Missouri Lottery’s first $30 Scratchers game. Introduced on Jan. 25, the game offers thousands of prizes worth more than $1,000, including 15 prizes ranging from $1 million to $10 million. An accompanying second-chance promotion offers players additional chances to win cash prizes of up to $1 million, too.
