A St. Louis man gives all the credit to his wife for his $15,000 payday from the Missouri Lottery. Jay McClain, 61, said he just plays whatever numbers his wife says are lucky. He also employs the strategy of buying multiple tickets for each drawing. It paid off on March 29, when he won more than $15,000 from five different Pick 4 tickets.
The winning Pick 4 combination on March 29 was 1-1-1-0, and a huge payout followed. The Lottery paid more than $682,000 in prizes in that drawing. McClain had several tickets with his wife’s favorite numbers, including quadruple sevens and the winning combination. He purchased all but one ticket at Ferguson Amoco, 1032 S. Florissant, in Ferguson.
His wife, Joann, noticed the winning number was one of her favorites and told Jay later that night.
“You know there was,” responded McClain, when asked if there was a “happy dance.”
He’s only been playing for about a year, although he admitted Joann has been playing longer. He said he’ll stick with the strategy of using her numbers on multiple tickets.
“Whatever her numbers are, yes, we’re sticking with it,” he laughed. “She’s the hot one!”
McClain said he was going to use some of the prize money to fix his riding lawn mower and “stick the rest in the bank.” After fiddling with the mower for a while, he later determined maybe it was time for an upgrade.
He offered this advice to other players.
“If you want to play and have a chance to win, you’ve got to take that risk,” concluded McClain.
Pick 4 is a twice-daily Draw Game. Players can win up to $6,000 in any drawing for matching all or some of the numbers, depending on play type.
