Branson area realtor Zemery Ellis was running errands on Jan. 29 when he decided to make a random purchase of Missouri Lottery tickets. He started with Lotto, but then a jackpot message on the Lottery terminal caught his eye. Ellis bought $5 worth of Show Me Cash Quick Pick tickets, which resulted in the $97,000 jackpot.

“I pulled in there and saw the Lottery (Lotto jackpot) was $2.5 (million) or something, so I got five of them,” recalled Ellis. “Then it ran across the screen that Show Me Cash was $97,000. I just told the lady who was working there, ‘Just give me five of those, too.’”

He purchased the winning ticket at Downstream Q Store, 4777 Downstream Blvd., in Joplin. Ellis said he likes to play the state games for the better odds. He didn’t realize he was a winner until days later.

Ellis said a manhunt prompted him to lock his car. He retrieved the tickets from his console as he did so, and he checked them at a store on the way to drop his son off at daycare. He saw the message, “Claim at Lottery Headquarters,” and the clerk told him he had won $97,000.

“I just put it in my pocket and went and volunteered at daycare for about 10 hours,” he declared.

Plans for the windfall vary. Ellis said he intended to pay some bills.

“Just keep on going,” he said. “I have a lot of irons in the fire with business. Probably invest it a little bit.”

When asked if we would still play the Lottery, Ellis replied, “You know, I might buy one occasionally. Yes, sir!”

He attributed his win to “being in the right place at the right time.”

Show Me Cash is a daily Draw Game with jackpots that start at $50,000 and grow until someone wins. In the last 12 months, 46 Show Me Cash jackpots have been awarded for an average amount of $171,000.

Downstream Q Store received a $500 bonus for selling a winning Show Me Cash ticket.
