Columbia Resident Wins First Ever Lottery Prize with Powerball

Melissa Camper seldom plays the Missouri Lottery, but she likes to indulge whenever “the mood is right.” However, when the recent Powerball jackpot reached $1.5 billion, it grabbed her attention.

“I’ve never won a prize, ever,” said Camper, 49, while claiming her $50,000 prize at Lottery Headquarters on Feb. 1. “I had to buy a few tickets. I mean, it was a chance at $1 billion!”

In the days leading up to the Jan. 13 drawing, Camper purchased three Powerball tickets using Quick Pick and her own combination of numbers from Break Time, 2205 N. Stadium in Columbia, where she always buys gas and makes her infrequent Lottery purchases.

After the Jan. 13 drawing, Camper realized that she missed the $1.5 billion jackpot and set her tickets aside to check at a later date. It wasn’t until Jan. 30 that Camper went back to her favorite Break Time and found out one of her Quick Pick tickets matched four numbers and the Powerball to win a $50,000 prize.

“I went into the Break Time to have a handful of tickets checked, and I noticed a sign on the door saying they had sold a $50,000 prize. I thought to myself, ‘Yeah right, you never win anything,’” recalled the mother-of-two.

“The clerk started scanning them, and they all said, ‘Not a winner. Not a winner.’ Then she scanned one, and it said, ‘Claim at Lottery.’ Her eyes got real big, and she said, ‘It’s you! You’re the one we’ve been waiting for!’”

With her $50,000 win, the computer programmer and University of Missouri graduate student plans to make some upgrades to her home, pay off some of her graduate school expenses and devote a portion to each of her children’s college funds.

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots that start at $40 million and have reached $1.5 billion. Camper is one of 15 Missouri Lottery winners who won a $50,000 prize in the Jan. 13 drawing. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. Research all current and past winning numbers here at MOLottery.com.
