KC Firefighters Win $50,000 Powerball Prize

A group of 15 firefighters from KCFD Fire Station 23 pooled their dollars for a chance to win the record-breaking $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot on Jan. 13. They didn’t score the jackpot prize, but the four white-ball numbers they matched, along with the Powerball, were enough to bring home a $50,000 prize.

The news also warranted some wake-up calls among the new winners.

“Yeah, we had to wake a few people up,” laughed Dan Utt, who spoke on behalf of the group. “There’s a solid core of us that buy tickets when the jackpot gets up there a couple hundred million.”

Plans for individual winnings vary among the firefighters, but Utt said the win came at a good time for many of them, while also serving as a much needed pick-me-up for the group.

“Somebody’s getting married, one just got engaged,” he shared. “And some have been injured.”

He pointed to a fire that claimed the lives of two firefighters from another station in Kansas City on Oct. 12. Fire Station 23 was second on the scene of that fire.

“We lost a couple of our brothers that day,” he said. “And virtually everyone who was in on this ticket was at that fire.”

The group consists of:  Christopher Anderson, 44; Matthew Bales, 32; Noah Beach, 31; Kim Cowan, 49; Eric Daraban, 29; Brian England, 51; Joe Galetti, 44; John German, 51; Dustin Kindall, 35; Mark Nichols, 37; Chadwick Perry, 45; Mark Ruhlman, 36; Christopher Siegel, 36; Daniel Utt, 49;  and Gary Wait, 54 – all of Kansas City.

The group’s winning Quick Pick ticket was purchased at Price Chopper, 5800 Wilson Road, in Kansas City.

Powerball is a multi-state Draw Game with jackpots that start at $40 million and grow until someone wins. The Jan. 13 drawing for $1.5 billion was the world’s largest lottery jackpot to date. The winning numbers drawn that night were:  4, 8, 19, 27, 34 and the Powerball was 10.
