It’s a holiday tradition for Pamela “Pam” McAusland’s family to have their annual family get-together in mid-January. It’s also pretty common for Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets to be gifted at the gathering. This year’s event will stand out from the rest after McAusland uncovered a $100,000 prize on a “$1,000 Frenzy” Scratchers ticket.

“I showed up to our family Christmas and a nephew said ‘Merry Christmas,’ and handed me a ticket,” said McAusland, 49, while claiming her prize on Jan. 19.

When playing Scratchers games, the Ste. Genevieve resident likes to scratch the numbers first, and then go back to uncover the prizes of any numbers she matched.

“By the time I matched four numbers, I went back to do amounts. I about died when I scratched the first $10,000, and I ended up matching 10 numbers all for $10,000,” recalled the giddy winner.

The family’s immediate reaction was that McAusland’s nephew was trying to pull a fast one by giving someone a gag ticket. The nephew, however, wasn’t joking around. He and McAusland immediately departed for a Missouri Lottery retail location to have the ticket checked.

With her $100,000 haul, the mother and soon to be grandmother-of-two is looking forward to purchasing her first brand-new vehicle:  a self-proclaimed “grandma-mobile.”

McAusland wasn’t the only family member to win a Missouri Lottery prize that day. McAusland’s gift for the family’s gift exchange consisted of 10 $2 Scratchers tickets. As fate would have it, the same nephew who gifted McAusland her winning ticket received the Scratchers gift. Those tickets ended up winning more than $100.

McAusland’s “$1,000 Frenzy” Scratchers ticket was purchased at Casey’s General Store, 10534 Highway 21, in Hillsboro.
Introduced on Dec. 29, 2015, “$1,000 Frenzy” is the $10 ticket in a family of Scratchers games with the “Frenzy” theme. The game offers players prizes ranging from $10 to $1 million, with more than $37 million in total prizes remaining.
