In anticipation of the historic $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot, Christopher and Michelle Janes of St. Robert decided to purchase a Missouri Lottery Powerball ticket for two plays in attempt to cash-in on the jackpot. Although they didn’t win the record-breaking jackpot, a last-minute decision to purchase a ticket for five plays instead of two resulted in a $50,000 prize.

Christopher purchased the winning Quick Pick ticket from Kum and Go, 130 Old Route 66 in St. Robert, where Michelle works.

“I got up in the morning and I pulled up the Missouri Lottery (website) just to see what the Powerball was, so I would know if we had won anything,” recalled Michelle, while the couple claimed their prize on Jan. 14. “I saw that we had the 10, and I thought to myself, ‘Woo-hoo!’”

Confident with the idea of winning a prize, Michelle drove to work and went about her daily routine. It wasn’t until later in the day that Michelle remembered the ticket and checked her numbers. To her disbelief, she saw that she and her husband matched four numbers and the Powerball number.

Michelle immediately called Christopher to have him read off the numbers drawn and even had her manager check the ticket. While claiming the $50,000 prize at the Lottery’s Springfield regional office, the reality still hadn’t quite set in for the couple.

“I’m still in a little bit of shock and disbelief, considering the fact that we were initially only going to do two plays and decided at the last minute to do five,” she continued, adding that the third play was the winning play.

With their $50,000 prize, the parents of five children are looking forward to purchasing a new vehicle that will fit the entire family, as well as paying off debt.

“We were planning on trying to buy a house this year, and we’ve been looking forward to paying down debt and getting ourselves in a better situation. This will definitely help in the long haul for us. To be able to have a home of our own for the kids to grow up in the future; that’s ultimately what we would like,” concluded Michelle.

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $40 million. The Janes were one of 15 Missouri Lottery players who won a $50,000 prize from the Jan. 13 drawing. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. Additional winner stories can be found by clicking the "Newsroom" tab.
