Salem Woman Claims $50,000 Powerball Prize

Kathleen Crocker of Salem said she likes to play the Missouri Lottery Show Me Cash game on a regular basis, but she took some chances on Powerball when the jackpot hit record levels on Jan. 13. With a record $1.5 billion jackpot that day, Crocker played with co-workers at the Missouri Dept. of Social Services, and bought one Quick Pick ticket for herself. She matched four white-ball numbers and the Powerball to win $50,000 on that ticket she purchased at Phil-Mart, 500 S. Main St., in Salem.

She was only one number off from winning the jackpot, but Crocker said she was happy with the $50,000 prize. She claimed that’s all she needs to help finish the house she’s building with her husband, Tim, and the smaller win is less intimidating.

“I try to play Show Me Cash every day,” she explained. “It’s daily, it’s smaller, but maybe more chances to win.”

Crocker said she discovered she was a winner the next day. She heard the winning Powerball numbers on the news, so she checked her ticket. She matched the Powerball number, so she kept looking.

“I had that one, so I thought, ‘Well, I’ll just look at one more number.’ Then another one, then another one,” she laughed.

Unlike players who wait for big jackpots to play the Lottery, Crocker said she plays when others don’t. She said those “little” jackpots are fine for her.

“Just keep playing,” she said. “People probably aren’t playing, so I am!”

Powerball is a twice weekly Draw Game with jackpots that start at $40 million. The Jan. 13 Powerball jackpot was a world record at $1.5 billion.
