A stay-at-home mom from Carthage saw the growing Missouri Lottery jackpot and decided to play. Amy Henson, 26, bought one Quick Pick ticket for the Powerball drawing on Jan. 9. The jackpot was up to $900 million, so she decided to “take a chance.”

“I figured, ‘Why not?’ It’s been probably three years since we played last time,” explained Henson.

It was a good move for the home daycare provider, who matched four white-ball numbers and the Powerball to win $50,000. The winning Powerball numbers for Jan. 9 were:  16, 19, 32, 34, 57, and the Powerball number was 13. Henson bought her winning ticket at Casey’s General Store, 2215 Fairlawn Drive, in Carthage.

Henson was out with friends when she discovered she had a winning ticket. Her friend had the winning numbers on her phone. With her husband, Brett, she set out to verify the $50,000 win.

“We didn’t really believe it at first,” she said. “We were trying to go around to the gas stations and see what they said.

“It’s exciting. It feels good.”

Their only plans are to “pay some stuff off,” which Henson said contributed to that “good feeling.”

Since she’s not a regular player, Henson wasn’t sure when she’d play the Lottery next, but it’s likely when the jackpot gets up there, she’ll take another chance. After all, it only took one ticket to win.

Powerball is a twice-weekly Draw Game with jackpots that start at $40 million. Drawings take place at 9:59 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday nights. For an extra $1 at the time of purchase, players can add Power Play to win larger non-jackpot amounts.
