“It’s not every day we come across money like that,” exclaimed Karen Burr, 61, while claiming a $2 million Missouri Lottery Lotto jackpot with her husband, Ron, 53.

The Truxton couple purchased their winning Lotto ticket from Victory Lane, 1760 W. Highway 47 in Troy, on Dec. 2. The couple used Quick Pick to correctly match all six numbers drawn in the Dec. 2 drawing – 12, 23, 25, 34, 40 and 42 – and will split the $4 million jackpot with another winning ticket holder, each taking home $2 million before taxes.

While claiming their $2 million prize on Dec. 28, Karen, who has played the Lotto Draw Game since it was introduced in 1986, said that she discovered the couple’s good fortune the day after the drawing while checking her tickets for winning numbers at MOLottery.com,

“I thought I kept entering in something wrong. I would go back and keep looking at (the numbers) three or four times. Then I called him in to read the numbers off to me,” she recalled. “We checked quite a few times, and we were thinking there was some kind of mistake. Needless to say, neither of us slept that night.”

The Burrs waited to claim their prize until they could share the news with family and had the chance to seek advice from a financial professional. Karen’s 100-year-old mother was the first person to hear the good news. The couple waited until the Christmas holiday to share the news with their three children and seven grandchildren, all of whom initially thought they were falling victim to a horrible joke.

Without hesitation, the couple said their first course of action will be to pay off their house, become debt free and invest the majority of the remaining prize. Ronald is looking forward to buying a new fishing boat, while Karen, who was already planning to retire in 2016, said that the win “will make retiring that much sweeter.”

For selling one of the winning Lotto jackpot tickets for the Dec. 2 drawing, Victory Lane received a $2,500 selling bonus.

Lotto is a twice-weekly Draw Game with jackpots that start at $1 million. The current Lotto jackpot for Wednesday night’s drawing is an estimated $1.9 million. To date, there have been 234 jackpots awarded in Lotto, the longest-running Missouri Lottery Draw Game.
