Eric Stewart of Jefferson City explained that he plays a few Missouri Lottery Scratchers every week. He used the winnings from a ticket he bought in Jefferson City to buy another ticket while in Freeburg and ended up with a $50,000 payday.

“This morning I stopped on the boulevard and got me a $3 Scratcher, and it was a $6 winner,” began Stewart, 48. “I drove up to Freeburg and was working. It was about 11 (a.m.) and I said, ‘I’m going to stop and cash this in.’ Got two more tickets, and the first ticket that came off was for $50,000.”

He won a “10X Crossword” ticket he purchased at Freeburg Eagle Stop, 101 N. Highway 63, in Freeburg. Stewart, a pest control technician, said he likes to play crossword games because “they take a little time,” and he “feels like I get my money’s worth.”

He called his wife, Nichole, right away, even though he wasn’t sure how much he won. Players spell out words on the ticket and win prizes based on the number of words they create. At first, he thought he just won $5,000. When she showed excitement, he began to waffle on the amount, eventually asking her to hold on while he checked the ticket again.

“What are you doing to me?” said Nichole.

Once they determined he had won $50,000, they started making plans for claiming the prize later that day. Stewart signed the ticket and told Nichole that it was locked in the glove box in case anything happened in the interim. They were able to claim it that afternoon on Dec. 10.

Stewart had a list of things to do with the windfall.
“Pay off some debt, charity, college funds,” he listed.  “I’d like to do some secret Santa stuff. I think we’re going to have a Merry Christmas.”
He added that he continue to play the Lottery and offered some advice to other players.
“Stick to your game,” he said. “Don’t switch them around!”
10X Crossword” is a $3 game that officially began June 1. Stewart claimed the seventh of eight top prizes available in the game. Two more crossword games have been released since. Players can win up to $100,000 on the $5 game, “Double Triple Crossword,” and a new $3 game was just released on Dec. 2 titled, “$50,000 Crossword  Extra.”
