A Nebraska woman was visiting her sister in Liberty when she bought a $1 million winning Missouri Lottery ticket. Carla Bowers of Fremont, Neb., said that she didn’t know until her sister, Colette, called to tell her someone won at the store where they shopped. Bowers bought four Quick Pick tickets for the Sept. 26 Powerball drawing at Speed Zone, 1137 Kansas St., in Liberty.

“My sister called and said, ‘Hey, have you checked your ticket? Because, they sold a winning ticket in Liberty at the gas station where we stopped.’ I checked it while I was at work, and I was like, ‘OMG,’” recalled Bowers.

The mortgage underwriter had to wait to take off work and return to Kansas City. She claimed her prize on Friday after the drawing at the Kansas City Lottery office. Bowers, 55, said some of the money would help with her retirement in 10-12 years, although she joked her boss didn’t want her to ever leave.

“He said they could set up a laptop for me in the nursing home,” she said.

She did mention that the windfall would allow her to buy a new car, a house, and set up college funds for her nieces.

“I have one niece who isn’t college age yet,” she explained. “So, I’m going to set up something for her to go to college. My other niece is in college, so I want to help pay for her.”

Bowers wasn’t a big player before, and she said she got lucky with the random purchase.

“It was just one of those things,” she said.

Powerball is a twice weekly Draw Game with jackpots that start at $40 million. Tickets cost $2, and drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
