A Springfield man who installs security systems knew just what to do with his $50,000 winning Missouri Lottery ticket – hide it under his mattress. Robert Gibby, 25, bought the “Red Hot Cherries” Scratchers ticket on Sunday, so he stashed it under his mattress until he could claim it the next day. He scratched off the $50,000 prize in the parking lot of Grand Mart & Mat, 1310 W. Grand St. in Springfield, where he bought the winning ticket.

“I get a couple of tickets every weekend,” he began. “I was getting some gas and got some snacks. I was getting ready to go play some Xbox; got a couple of Scratchers and got that one.”

When he uncovered the prize, Gibby couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“I tried to reserve the excitement until I got home and had someone else look at it,” he recalled. “It took quite a while before any of us believed it was real.”

Gibby said he might buy a new car with the windfall, indicating only that it would be a “manual.” He also has a solid plan for the money.

“I have an IRA plan in order to save up for retirement,” he explained. “This will be real helpful in getting that started.”

He added that he’ll continue playing the Lottery, using a quote he heard on the way to claim his prize.

“You can’t win if you don’t play,” he said.

Red Hot Cherries” is a $3 game that officially began Sept. 21. Gibby claimed the fourth of five top prizes in the game. More than $1 million in prizes remain. Track prizes remaining for any Missouri Lottery game here at MOLottery.com.
