Missouri Lottery Balloon Finishes First in St. Louis Race; Piloted by Jefferson City Man

The Missouri Lottery hot air balloon took first-place honors in the 43rd annual Great Forest Park Balloon Race, held Sept. 19, in St. Louis. The balloon was flown by the Lottery’s long-time pilot, Jim “Flyin’ Jim” Wolters.

“We are elated to learn that we took first place,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. “Jim has piloted our balloon for 22 years. He’s a highly skilled and seasoned professional, and we are so lucky to have him and his team handling our balloon.”
Wolters won the “race” by dropping his marker, a bag of birdseed, closest to the lead balloon’s landing spot, which ended up within 40 feet of the target. Zach Burgess, flying for Curves®, took second place, and Scott Wooge, piloting a balloon for Purina, took third place.

This is the first time Wolters or the Lottery balloon has won the St. Louis race.

The Great Forest Park Balloon Race is a free event, and it is the most well-attended, single-day balloon race in the country.
