Potosi Man Scratches His Way To Lottery Prize

Story Photo

Barry Sitzes is a lucky man.  He has a wife, Shawntay, two grown sons and a grandchild, with another one on the way. He is also at a transition in his life. After being laid off at his old job, he decided to go back to college. Despite the set-back, Sitzes is excited about his future.  He is working towards a degree as a medical equipment technician and hopes to work in the St. Louis area after graduation.

Sitzes, 41, has a routine of stopping for a beverage and purchasing a lottery ticket.  On Aug. 17, he pulled into Short’s Stop Convenience, 10215 West State Highway E, in Potosi. He was feeling lucky, so he decided to purchase a “Diamond Tripler” Scratchers ticket. His routine paid off when he won the top prize of $50,000.

“I scratched the ticket in the parking lot at the store. I didn’t believe what I saw, so I had to go back into the store and have the clerk take a look at it,” Sitzes explained.

Although he is excited about his lucky ticket, he remains philosophical about his win.

“It can happen to anybody,” he confided.

Sitzes says he plans to use his winnings to build a new garage that he’s been dreaming about.

“It’s going to be a 30-by-40-foot garage with lean-tos on both sides,” he chuckled.  “I’ve been thinking about this for a while.”

"Diamond Tripler" is a $3 ticket with at top prize of $50,000.  The game features the chance of tripling your prize by revealing the “3X” symbol.
