When he travels for work, James McEwen of Beaufort occasionally buys Missouri Lottery tickets. He bought a Quick Pick ticket at Express Mart, 801 Collins Drive in Festus, and matched all five winning numbers in the Aug. 10 Show Me Cash drawing to win the $139,000 jackpot.

“I didn’t know where I won it,” explained McEwen. “I thought I won it there in Union.”

“He just bought a bunch of tickets that week,” his wife, Kelly, chimed in.

McEwen said he normally plays Lotto and Mega Millions and started playing Show Me Cash on the suggestion of a clerk. While doing an epoxy floor in a school building, a city employee shared a story that steered him to Quick Pick tickets.

“He played the same numbers religiously. He forgot to pick up his tickets on the way home, and his numbers hit. I would have shot myself. So, I don’t pick my own numbers,” he concluded.

The McEwens have horses, and Kelly and one of their children barrel race. They compete for prizes and plan to spend a little of the winnings on horses, but McEwen panned that it was just a hobby.

“If you want to have a million-dollar barrel racer, start with $2 million,” he joked. “I do get to go trail riding on Labor Day!”

Plans for the windfall center mostly around getting out of debt.

“We’re paying off all our bills except for the house,” the two said in unison.

“She wants some quality time together, so we’re going to go to a couple of bigger barrel races,” added James.
“Out of state!” declared Kelly.

McEwen said he found out he was a winner on Saturday after the drawing. Low on cash, he was checking his tickets from the past two weeks, so he could get some more.

“I hadn’t won a ticket. I said, ‘I guess I’m done for this week.’ And then, it (machine) said $139,000,” he recalled. “I just flipped it (ticket) over, wrote my name on it, handed it to the girl behind the register, and I’m like, ‘Will you check this and see if it’s telling you the same thing it’s telling me?’”

“We’re not going to get anything big or fancy, but we are going to get out of debt, and we’re both ecstatic about that,” added Kelly.

McEwen said he’ll continue to play.

“Oh, yeah, I’ve got a couple of Show Me Cash,” he admitted. “Everybody is like, ‘Well, you can’t win if you don’t play.’ For a couple of bucks, heck, I wasted that much on doughnuts.”

Express Mart received a $500 bonus for selling the winning Show Me Cash jackpot ticket. The winning numbers for Aug. 10 were:  13, 15, 27, 29 and 38.

Show Me Cash is a daily Draw Game with jackpots that start at $50,000 and grow until someone wins. In the last year, a total of 44 Show Me Cash jackpots have been awarded for an average amount of $193,000.
