De Soto Resident Wins $100,000

A $5 addition to his diesel bill led a Union Pacific Railroad worker to a $100,000 payday.

It happened just that quickly for 29-year-old Cody Portell of De Soto, when he decided to buy a single “20X The Money” Scratchers ticket while paying for diesel fuel at Express Mart, 900 Peach Tree Plaza, in Hillsboro.

“The 20X just kind of catches your eye,” Portell said.

He scratched his lucky ticket later at home, and that’s when he discovered it held the top prize of $100,000 – the second of seven available $100,000 top prizes.

“I double-checked it a couple of times, just to make sure,” he teased.

Portell initially plans to pay off some bills and then save a portion of his winnings.

“I’m definitely not going to spend it all,” he said. “We want to have some for down the road.”

20X The Money,” which offers a top prize of $100,000, officially started May 18. Remaining prizes for this $5 game, and all other Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets, can be tracked at MOLottery.com.
