Missouri Lottery Recognized for Excellence in Responsible Gaming

The Missouri Lottery’s responsible gaming program has been acknowledged for excellence by the World Lottery Association (WLA). The Level 3 certification is awarded by the WLA’s Independent Assessment Panel, which is comprised of experts from across the world who specialize in corporate responsibility. With this Level 3 certification, the Missouri Lottery has become only the sixth U.S. lottery to receive this designation.
To achieve Level 3 distinction under the WLA’s responsible gaming framework, gaming entities are evaluated on their contributions towards elements such as problem gambling research, game design, responsible advertising, stakeholder engagement, reporting and education among players, employees and retailers.

“This certification affirms that our responsible gaming program promotes responsible play at every level of operation, and that our program dedicates itself to protecting our players,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. “We plan to uphold these standards set forth by WLA and pursue innovative avenues to further improve our program.”

Since its inception nearly 30 years ago, the Missouri Lottery has shown a strong dedication towards establishing and maintaining a high standard of corporate responsibility. During that time, the Missouri Lottery quickly became an industry leader in promoting responsible gaming and raising awareness on problem gambling concerns.

“We were the first lottery in the country to actively pursue the creation of a statewide coalition focusing on problem gambling prevention:  the Missouri Alliance to Curb Problem Gambling,” said Reardon. “Through collective efforts from its members, the Alliance would later pass a statewide proclamation declaring the month of August as Missouri’s Responsible Gaming Education Month; another industry-wide first.”
Treatment referral, ease of access to information about prizes and chances of winning are also vital portions in the certification process. Missouri’s problem gambling hotline, 1-888-BETSOFF (1-888-238-7633), connects callers to free help with licensed professionals and is funded, maintained and promoted by Alliance members. The Missouri Lottery encloses chances of winning and Bets Off information on all games, marketing materials, news releases and the website, as well.
The certification comes one week before the 12th annual Midwest Conference on Problem Gambling and Substance Abuse in Kansas City. The conference invites treatment and prevention providers, coordinators and industry professionals to a three-day summit focusing on problem gambling and substance abuse concerns. The Missouri Lottery has been an active contributor to the conference since it began in 2003.
The WLA’s responsible gaming certification program is comprised of four levels, with Level 4 being the highest. Lotteries must re-apply for certification every three years.
