Coffee Break Sweetened By Scratchers Win

Story Photo

When Karen Halley makes her regular coffee stop at U-Gas, 2311 Upper Bottom Road in St. Charles, she always buys a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket. The retiree says she has a routine of drinking coffee and scratching a ticket each morning at the store. On June 8, she had more than a caffeine rush when she scratched her way to a $100,000 prize.
“I sat down and started scratching. I matched the first number and thought I’d won $4,000,” Halley explained. “I kept scratching and the amount just got bigger and bigger.”
The St. Charles resident said she had an “oh, my gosh” moment. She had the clerk double-check the ticket. He confirmed her “Millionaire Riches” Scratchers ticket was a big winner.
Halley, 59, hurried home to show the ticket to her husband, Mike. She rushed through the door and screamed his name.
“He thought he was in trouble,” she laughed. “Mike looked at the ticket and couldn’t believe it, either. He joked that we can both stay retired now.”
Halley says they plan on using part of their windfall to visit the Florida Keys.
"Millionaire Riches" is a $10 game with a top prize of $1 million and 20 chances to win on each ticket.
