A Kansas City security guard is protecting his own pile of cash after locating the top prize on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket. Garret Carmichael, 22, purchased a “7” Scratchers ticket at QuikTrip, 5025 N. Antioch Road in Kansas City, on April 17. He began scratching the ticket in the store, but after seeing a $5,000 prize right away, he set out for home where he finished uncovering the $77,777 prize.

“I scratched the first number and saw $5,000 and started freaking out,” began Carmichael. “Like, ‘Is this real?’ I broke down. I got emotional about it.”

He kept the ticket concealed in his car until he could claim the prize at the Kansas City Lottery office on April 20. Carmichael knew how he would spend the windfall.

“Save it,” he said. “Well, save most of it, then bills, and some of it for my play fund.”

Some of that might include a new motorcycle. He admitted to winning $50 on a “Harley-Davidson Open Road” Scratchers ticket later that weekend, but he also thinks he would prefer a “speed bike.” Not that he would turn down a new Harley-Davidson, one of the prizes available on that game.

“My dad rides,” he said, suggesting he was open to winning a motorcycle.

Carmichael said he’s been playing the Lottery since he was 18 and that he would continue.

“Keep playing it,” he said. “Eventually, something good will come out of it.”

7” is a $5 game that officially began April 19. More than $6 million in prizes, including two top prizes, remain in the game. Track prizes remaining for any Missouri Lottery Scratchers game here at MOLottery.com.
