MISSOURI LOTTERY SALES UP 15 PERCENT

Despite a soft economy, Missouri Lottery sales remained strong during fiscal year 2002, breaking all previous sales records. Missouri Lottery ticket sales overall were nearly $585.2* million. "We had a very good year, in spite of many challenges," said Jim Scroggins, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. "We have seen sales increases in almost every product, particularly Powerball and Scratchers, which continue to show the most improvement." Scroggins said the fiscal year 2002 sales increase can be attributed to: high Powerball jackpots, including the second-highest jackpot to date of $280 million in August 2001; a larger variety of price points on Scratchers games; and successful product promotions. More than $350* million in prizes were awarded to Missouri Lottery players during the past fiscal year. Twelve Missouri Lottery players became millionaires, winning jackpots ranging from $1.1 million to $19.6 million. In all, $43 million in jackpot prizes were awarded. Sixty-two Missouri Lottery Powerball players won $100,000, and 20 players won $50,000 tax paid playing SHOW ME 5 Paydown during fiscal year 2002. In addition, record sales in fiscal year 2002 translated into record proceeds to Missouri’s public education programs. During fiscal year 2002, the lottery transferred more than $160* million to the Lottery Proceeds Fund to benefit various public education programs. Scroggins added that while lottery proceeds continue to increase and are a significant source of income, the funds only make up approximately 3 percent of education’s total annual budget.
