St. Louis Woman Claims New Game's First $75,000 Top Prize

A little bit of irritation isn’t always a bad thing. Just ask Elizabeth Hodgkins, whose go-with-the-flow attitude paid off to the tune of $75,000 after an “irritating” situation led her to the first top prize on a “Harley-Davidson Open Road” Scratchers ticket. The winning ticket was purchased at Phillips MPC, 1655 S. Jefferson Ave., in St. Louis.

“I was standing in line, and the lady in front of me was taking a long time picking out scratch-offs,” Hodgkins, 27, explained. “It was really irritating me.”

By the time she made her way to the register, though, she was looking at the tickets in a new light.

“I said, ‘Oh, I’ll get one,’” she shared with a laugh, noting that a sticker indicating it was a new game had drawn her eye to the $5 Harley-Davidson® ticket.

As she then pumped her gas outside, Hodgkins began scratching her ticket and noticed that the prizes were adding up.

“I got half of it scratched and started crying,” she said. “Then I called my uncle.”

The rest of her $75,000 prize was revealed when she finished scratching the ticket back at home.

Hodgkins looks forward to potentially using her winnings for an investment opportunity.

“I work for my aunt and uncle, and we talked about investing in real estate together,” she said. “Maybe a four-family flat or something that would keep money coming in.”

Summing up her experience as a Lottery winner, Hodgkins teased, “If someone irritates you, don’t let it bother you too much.”

Two top prizes of $75,000, as well as five second-tier prizes of a Harley-Davidson® motorcycle, remain unclaimed in the “Harley-Davidson Open Road” Scratchers game. The game officially started March 9, offering more than $11 million in total prizes. All remaining prizes can be tracked at MOLottery.com.
