A second-generation farmer from Sturgeon got his own pot of gold this past St. Patrick’s Day after winning a $278,000 Missouri Lottery Show Me Cash jackpot. Every morning, William Kemner buys a Show Me Cash, a Powerball and a Lotto ticket while getting coffee with friends at Heuer’s Country Store & Cafe, 15471 Highway 63 N., in Sturgeon. Kemner, who purchased his ticket on March 16, used Quick Pick to correctly match all five numbers drawn:  15, 21, 31, 33 and 37.

“I didn’t go down there that day (March 17) to have coffee,” recalled Kemner, discussing how he found out about his good fortune. “Come to find out, there were only two tickets bought that day. The other guy that bought the ticket was there and checked his ticket,” continued Kemner, who was relieved when he got word that the other player’s ticket was not the winner.

Kemner, a retired teacher, said he was out of town selling beans the morning of March 17 and was a little shook up when he found out about the win. Kemner called his wife, Joyce, and told her to get ready to go to lunch at Heuer’s.

“When we walked in, everybody clapped and hoorayed and everything else; they already knew,” laughed the grandfather.

While claiming their prize at Lottery headquarters on March 26, the couple admitted that they were still in shock and disbelief about their win, but they were looking forward to putting their money towards bills, new farming equipment and savings.

When asked if he would continue playing the Missouri Lottery, Kemner laughed saying, “I played it this morning – Show Me Cash, Lotto and Powerball – the same three.”

For selling the winning Show Me Cash ticket, Heuer’s received a $500 bonus check.

Show Me Cash” is a daily Draw Game that features a rolling jackpot starting at $50,000 that grows until someone wins. Kemner’s $287,000 win marks the 351st Show Me Cash jackpot won since the Draw Game was introduced in 2008. In the past 12 months, 47 jackpots have been won with an average jackpot of more than $187,000. To date, more than $53 million in prizes ranging from $50,000 to $988,000 have been awarded in the game.
