Sherry McKee drives from Hermann to Washington every day for work, but now that she’s won $100,000 from the Missouri Lottery, she is planning retirement at the end of the year. McKee, 61, said she doesn’t mind the commute because there are lots of places to shop along the way. She frequently buys Lottery tickets, but ironically, the $100,000 win came on another meandering road trip on her day off.

“I bought one, and I won $40,” recalled McKee. “So we stopped at another place, and I won another $40. We were doing a road trip; just kind of made a fun day out of it. We said, ‘Well, we’ll just keep doing this.’ The third one was this one (winning ticket).”

McKee purchased the $100,000 winning “$100 Million Cash Bonanza” Scratchers ticket at Casey’s General Store, 601 S. Highway 47, in Warrenton. She uncovered the prize as they were driving down the road.

“I got kind of quiet, and he says, ‘Did you win on that one?’ I said, ‘Yeah, $100,000,’” said McKee.

Her retired husband, Sam, didn’t believe her at first. He soon pulled over so he could look at the ticket.

“And then we went to the American Legion and started playing Keno,” added Sam.

McKee said the windfall helped make up her mind about retirement. She has already picked out a new car “so I can finish out the year.”

“This kind of made it good,” she declared.

She said she’ll keep playing the Lottery.

“You can’t win if you don’t play,” said McKee.

“$100 Million Cash Bonanza” is a $20 game that officially began Aug. 4, 2014. The game features a top prize of $4 million.
