A Kirksville resident is the newest Missouri Lottery millionaire, after claiming the $2.2 million Lotto jackpot from the Feb. 21 drawing. Tom Hawkins and his wife, Cheryl, claimed the prize at the Lottery’s Headquarters in Jefferson City on March 12, almost three weeks after the drawing. Hawkins purchased the only winning ticket in the drawing from Hy-Vee Gas, 502 N. Baltimore St., in Kirksville and used Quick Pick to correctly match all six numbers in the drawing, which were:  6, 8, 16, 27, 30 and 38.

While claiming his prize, Hawkins, a small business owner, said that he likes to play all the big Draw Games offered by the Missouri Lottery, adding that his $2.2 million jackpot marks his biggest win yet.

“I was at Hy-Vee, and I had the tickets with me, so I checked them. That’s how I discovered it. I didn’t tell a soul,” recalled Hawkins, noting that his wife was out of town when he realized he had won the jackpot. “By the time she got back, the entire town seemed to know about it.”

Once Hawkins could catch his wife up to speed on the win, they visited MOLottery.com to see what they should do after winning a million-dollar prize.

“We followed the information and did talk to a financial advisor, a CPA and got some legal advice,” he said

The couple waited to claim their prize until they had spoken with all the recommended professionals. During that time, they narrowed down at least one expenditure they plan on pursuing with their Lottery win.

“The one thing that we both agree on is to set up college education funds for our three grandchildren,” concluded Hawkins

For selling the winning ticket, Hy-Vee Gas received a bonus check for $5,000.

Lotto is a twice-weekly Draw Game with jackpots that start at $1 million. To date, there have been 229 jackpots awarded in Lotto, ranging from $1 million to $19 million.
