Lottery Winners 'Play it Forward' to Grandchildren

A couple’s long-standing love of Missouri Lottery’s Club Keno Draw Game has paid off for them and their eight grandchildren. Almost every day, Rita and Gary Mispagel of Versailles play Club Keno using the same number combination at Blazing Saddles, 120 W. Newton St., in Versailles.

"We go there with the same group of friends every day to play Club Keno," said Gary.

The couple, who have two children and eight grandchildren ranging in age from six to 17, said they always use the same numbers when playing Club Keno.

"We always play an 8-Spot game using our eight grandchildren’s birthdays," chimed Rita.

The formula seems to be paying off for the proud grandparents. Their lucky set of numbers – 4, 5, 6, 7, 16, 20, 25 and 30 – paid out a staggering $25,147 Club Keno prize on March 5.

"I said, ‘Look at that!’" recalled Rita, after seeing their numbers on the Club Keno monitors.

"I jumped up, and everyone in the room started screaming. The owner of the bar, who is a good friend, even came to celebrate," recalled Gary.

The doting grandparents aren’t just using their grandchildren’s birthdays as their lucky winning Lottery numbers; they plan on "Playing it Forward" to them, as well.

"We opened a savings account for each of our grandchildren when they were born and deposit money every year. They get the money when they turn 18. We are going to divide this money up and put it in their accounts," the proud grandmother declared. "Two of them are 17 now and plan to go to college after graduating. This will definitely come in handy."

The couple plan to keep a little of their winnings for their own savings accounts, as well.

This is not the first time the winning number combination has paid off for the grandparents, either. According to the couple, they have won three $1,800 Club Keno prizes before with those winnings also going towards their grandchildren’s saving accounts.

To play Club Keno, players choose how many different numbers (also called "spots") they want to play from 1 to 10. Twenty numbers from a field of 1 to 80 are chosen in a computerized random Club Keno drawing held every four minutes.
