What’s better than winning half a million dollars from the Missouri Lottery? Winning half a million dollars and not owing Uncle Sam a dime! That’s what happened to James Sowell of Raytown, who won the first of three $500,000 top prizes in the Lottery’s “$500,000 Taxes Paid” Scratchers game.

Sowell, 67, purchased the winning ticket at Hy-Vee, 9400 E. 350 Highway in Raytown, on Feb. 14.

“I go with the old people to get coffee,” he said, teasing about his routine trips to Hy-Vee to socialize and buy Scratchers tickets.  “The $10 ones catch my eye; I’ve had better luck on those.”

That theory was realized when he uncovered the game’s top prize, though he couldn’t quite believe his own eyes at first.

“I said, ‘I can’t be seeing this right,’” he shared, explaining that he asked an employee at the store to check it as well.

“It was a shock,” he added, while claiming his prize at the Lottery’s Kansas City regional office. “But I’ve had three days to ponder this, and I’m as happy as can be.”

Sowell’s immediate plans include working with an “investment guy,” as well as purchasing a vehicle and helping out his father.

To date, “$500,000 Taxes Paid” features more than $27.5 million in available prizes, including two additional prizes of $500,000. Remaining prizes for this game, and all other Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets, can be tracked at MOLottery.com.
