Mexico Man Wins $100,000 Before Work

A stop on the way to work resulted in a $100,000 payday for one Mexico man. Eric Barnes, 59, was killing time before reporting to work at Hubbell Power Systems in Centralia on Feb. 3. He stopped at Xpress Liquor and Smokes, 402 Morley St. in Moberly, and purchased a “50X The Cash” Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket. While scratching the ticket in the car, he realized he had stumbled upon a big winner.

“We’ll stop at two or three places, just riding around before work,” he explained. “I generally break even. Today, I broke better than even. It took a little while to sink in. I hope it’s a good trend this year.”

Barnes is close to retirement, but this win wasn’t quite big enough. He said he enjoys the $10 and $20 Scratchers in pursuit of a $1 million or larger prize, which would be sufficient, but suggested players should “only spend what you can spend.”

“Spread it around,” he counseled. “Instead of just buying one game, but a whole bunch of them; just spread it around.”

He’s won $1,000 before, but this was the largest haul for Barnes. He plans to “pay a few bills” with the windfall.

“I don’t know, I might take a vacation or something,” he said. He admitted his wife, Ann, was at home making plans for the money.

50X The Cash” is a $10 game that officially began Dec. 30, 2013. The game features a top prize of $1 million. More than $6 million in prizes, including one top prize, remain in the game.
