Columbia Resident Surprises Girlfriend with Lottery Win

A Columbia man is $5,000 richer after purchasing a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket from Mari’s, 1210 Prathersville Road, in Columbia. Andre Hammons, 39, purchased a handful of “$5,000 Taxes Paid” Scratchers tickets on Jan. 29 and claimed his prize at the Lottery’s Headquarters on Jan. 30.
“I played them when I got home,” recalled Hammons. “The last number I scratched on one of the tickets was the one that matched one of my numbers.”
The Columbia resident continued saying that he neglected to mention his good fortune to his girlfriend, Diana, until the next morning.
“At first, I told her that I had won $975, then $2,500, then I told her about the $5,000.”
Hammons said that he initially only told his girlfriend he had won $975 to make her think that they could only pay off their bills; the rest was just to surprise her.

In addition to paying off their bills, the couple is looking forward to purchasing a truck with their Lottery win.

$5,000 Taxes Paid” is the $1 ticket included in a family of games with the “Taxes Paid” theme. The ticket was officially introduced on Dec. 29, 2014. Hammons is the first Lottery player to claim the $5,000 top prize.
