A regular player of Missouri Lottery crossword games was shocked when she found out she won $20,000. Janet Loucks of Piedmont said she enjoys passing the time with Scratchers games and has even won $500 before. She thought that’s what she had won, until she presented the winning ticket at the St. Louis Lottery office.

“At first I thought there was $25 on the top and $10 on the bottom (of the ticket),” began Loucks. “So, I took it in to cash it, and she said, ‘I can’t cash it. You need to take it to a Lottery office.’ I was going back through it, and I found some (prizes) I’d missed. I thought, ‘Oh, this is a $500 ticket.’

“Two or three days later when my eyes were rested, I looked some more and realized it was like a $5,000 winning ticket,” she recalled.

Loucks said she uncovered more prizes on the bottom half of the ticket and quit looking because, “I was getting too excited.”

She didn’t realize the ticket was worth $20,000 until she claimed the prize on Jan. 15.

“That’s going to help me. I need to do some stuff,” she declared.

Loucks said she would like to save some of the money, but she has some car repairs and bills to pay. She plans to save a little back for her adopted son who will soon turn 16 and need a vehicle.

“Keep hanging in there, because one day you’ll hit it big. I did,” she said with a laugh. “My mom, when she was alive, she said if you don’t play the game, you don’t ever win. And that’s true.”

Loucks bought her winning “$100,000 Crossword Doubler” Scratchers ticket at Piedmont Gas Mart, 523 S. Main, in Piedmont. “$100,000 Crossword Doubler” is a $5 game that officially began Nov. 3, 2014.
